GDX 2025 Conference

July 16-17, 2025

Queen Elizabeth II Federal Building, Edmonton, Alberta

The 2025 GDX conference marks ten years of celebrating excellence in the Albertan game development community and the global games industry

GDX 2025 Summits

AI/ML + Games Summit

Alberta is home to some of the foremost AI research institutions on the planet: the University of Alberta, and Amii, Canada's top centre of AI excellence. Ranked third in the world for AI, and second in the world for games + AI publications, the University of Alberta's experts in AI and games will provide you with unprecedented insight into the future of game development through AI and ML, while fellows from the world-renowned Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute will guide cutting-edge AI workshops for you to join.

Indie Realities

We elevate lesser known indie developers who are innovating in ways that really push the industry forward. Indie developers who not only push the envelope in terms of game design, but also with their teams and their communities. What does it mean to be an indie, and how do we make the indie experience sustainable? How do we build solidarity amongst indies in order to build a strong indie ecosystem?

Building a Better Games Industry Summit

Equity, diversity, and inclusion is an area of growth for the games industry. Let's move the conversation beyond representation, and more into the brass tacks of integrating EDI directly into your products, your teams, your policies and practices, and your studio culture. What constitutes authentic representation? How do we achieve belonging with uniqueness in our studios? It's time to dive deep and get broad with activating EDI in the games industry. Hear from a broad spectrum of skilled practitioners doing EDI work.

Indigeneity & Diaspora in Games Summit

Our newest summit, the Indigeneity and Diaspora in Games Summit (IDiG) will explore the challenges and triumphs of the diverse people working within the games industry. The IDiG Summit has been co-created with a committee dedicated to representing unique perspectives from across the globe and will welcome speakers from the Netherlands, Australia, Treaty 6 Territory, and more.

Kat Barkwell, Games Industry Advocate

Track: Indigeneity and Diaspora in Games

Studios of all sizes often have Employee Resource Groups, which at first glance seem like the best way to find community at work. But often these avoid real challenges to structural oppression and use “Girl Boss” feminism as DEI points for corporations. So How can organizations encourage allyship among all employees? How do you ensure intersectionality? How can you impact the culture of the city you work out of? Your little corner of the internet, or your community? And as an individual How do you hold your company accountable? How can you even address workplace issues without fear of repercussions? The bad news is solidarity and perseverance are respectable because they’re hard to do. The good news it’s actually much harder to not try at all.

Jinting Zhao, SHE-Q Audio

Track: Indie

It is an emerging trend that games and interactive media are applying for funding from arts grant bodies that support other artistic disciplines like music, dance, and film. However, success has been limited not because of an inherent bias against games as a multidisciplinary art form, but due to a lack of understanding of how to navigate arts funding systems and values. This session is a basic roadmap for how to position yourself for success as a game developer for funding support from the arts.
