Swordmonkey Studios Inc. is a full-service interactive media and software development studio based in Alberta, Canada. They are a remote-first, technology agnostic organization and have the capabilities to handle everything from art direction, video game console development ports, game development, enterprise application development, web application development and everything in between.

Legumi is a retro-styled adventure game about eating beans and finding true happiness.

Based off of an original board game idea, Legumi features classic artwork inspired by the creator's childhood designs.

Will-o-Works (July 22-28)

Edmonton

Will-o-Works is an indie game studio based out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The studio was founded by two queer women, and focuses on the development of character-driven action games. Drawing inspiration from everything from Touhou Project to lolita fashion, Will-o-Works creates unique games that blend disparate genres, including the danmaku-detective Star Apprentice series.

Room 322 Games (July 19-21, July 26-28)

Edmonton

Soul Riders is a game about fast paced multiplayer fun. Players take control of one of many ghost friends as they compete in a variety of vehicle based challenges. All of these challenges are played in the core game mode; Midnight Mischief.  In this mode, players will be dropped onto an open map. From there players must seek out a vehicle that’s to their liking and upgrade it as much as possible before time runs out.

Tahpin (July 19-21)

Tahpin is a gaming platform that helps businesses and institutions achieve social relevance by impacting the financial wellness of their clients and employees. Tahpin takes a holistic view of understanding and dealing with a person’s financial understanding and situation and leverages these insights into lessons that lead to financial stability and success through gaming. The World of Tahpin's first release is Catch Finance a runner-style game. Prepare to test your financial knowledge as you weave through the mines to catch the correct financial terms and build general financial skills. Get ready to play, learn and earn in The World Of Tahpin.

Phat Games is a independent game development studio that has been making games since 2015. We have previously published a mobile puzzle game, Burgal's Bounty on the App Store and Google Play. We are currently working on a 16-bit style JRPG called Kids of Karendow.

One Over Games is an independent game studio based in Edmonton, Alberta.

One Over Games' first game is Imitosis, an experimental 5-minute visual novel that will be available on Steam for free!

Variable Eye Games (July 26-28)

Variable Eye Games is a group of highly talented students that came together with the goal of making Within The Vault. While the original project was for the capstone in the University of Alberta's certificate in computer game development, the studio has stuck together and continues to work on the project. Stay tuned for any future announcements and upcoming projects!

We Need Weevils (July 22-28)

Edmonton

We Need Weevils is a dedicated team of six individuals developing The Drawnjuring—an absurdist game based on the rivalry of an immortal lich and disembodied hand. Our game began as a capstone project for INT D 450, a class offered by the University of Alberta, and has since evolved into a passion project that we agreed to continue developing after the end of the Winter 2024 semester.

We are Ethan and Brae! We're just your humble game dev couple trying to make something really fun and compelling for others to enjoy! c:

Ethan took the opportunity last October to branch off and start our current project catboyzoom! He serves as the creative vision, designer, artist, and any other hat that needs wearing.

Brae is the programmer and sound designer, working in her off-hours while employed full-time at Inflexion Games here in Edmonton.

We are the House Hippos, a small but mighty team of indie developers based in North America. Our studio was initially formed as part of the Game Development capstone course at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, but we have since continued developing with big dreams to take our little game further.

Milo Productions (July 19-21)

Milo Productions Inc was founded by husband-and-wife creative team, Michael Milo and Flordeliza Dayrit, when they realized as parents that there was a desperate lack of entertainment content that would empower and guide their young children to understand and appreciate the same principles they held. Time Hoppers: The Silk Road fills this need in children’s entertainment by providing a high-quality adventure experience that players of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds can enjoy.

TasteyLunch is a talented team where creative ideas are made into reality. With a strong vision and inspired by Earthbound and Undertale, TasteyLunch is excited to feature Dog Adventure Harmony, a silly RPG with heartfelt undertones. Tasteylunch is proud of their delicious pixel artwork and banger music. The studio has been developing since 2020 with a dedicated team of 1 solo developer.

The Frozen Machine (July 19-21)

Edmonton

The Frozen Machine is an independent game development studio based out of Edmonton, Alberta. After studio heads Adrian, Alex and Raiford met while taking courses at the North Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), they realized they all enjoyed multiple aspects of game development; from art, to programming, to design. With several games under their belt now, they look forward to showing off their newest ones at GDX.

YANCY is an NES style action adventure that follows a small protagonist in an open world full of danger, swords and rewards. YANCY builds off the original Legend of Zelda, with similar combat mechanics and scale, but with more unique content, less obtuse puzzle design, refined controls, and modern design sensibilities.

UFCW 401 (July 22-25)

Edmonton

The UFCW 401 workers at Keywords Studios were laid off in September amidst negotiations to achieve a first collective agreement. The team had joined UFCW 401 in Summer 2022 – making history by becoming the first ever workers in Canada’s videogame industry to form a union in their workplace. The team had previously worked on quality assurance and testing for industry heavyweight BioWare, owned by Electronic Arts.

University of Alberta Virtual Gym (July 22-25)

Physical and cognitive abilities decline with age. In addition, lethargy increases the vulnerability of the elderly population — several factors could obstruct them from exercising regularly, such as limitations related to mobility, finances, transportation, or weather.  Adapting commercial games correctly for older adults can be challenging, and it certainly requires the presence of a health practitioner to supervise and provide the necessary adjustments to suit a commercial game into a silver game.
